Merchants of Cool
There's a great webpage that accompanies the documentary we watched last Wednesday, "The Merchants of Cool." It includes more information on the major media giants, transcripts of the interviews in the film, additional links to related topics. etc.

And: a little humor from "The Onion"
UPDATE: It looks like the Onion joke about the FCC disappeared (wasn't archived). Oh well!

More on Media Concentration and Consolidation
There was a lot of information thrown at you in this first lecture on media concentration and consolidation. But if that wasn't enough, here are some links to some additional resources from which you can get more information. If you know of other good resources, let me know.

In addition to the article in the reader, Eric Boelhert of salon.com has published a number of provocative articles about the radio giant. This link is to a directory of his articles published at salon (on a variety of topics, including clear channel).

The Future of Music Coalition is a group that has been following the concentration and consolidation in the music and radio industries and has been doing some important activism around this issue. There's a lot of helpful information and resources at their site.

Robert McChesney, who we're reading a number of times this quarter, has founded a media activism group, called Free Press. Their website mediareform.net has links to lots of informational resources (about the recent deregulation and many other media/politics matters). But it also has a lot of information about how to get involved, what you can do-- from getting involved in micro radio to sending letters to Congress people, etc.

For lots of information about the ownership patterns in the major media companies (i.e., if my 10 billion overheads weren't enough!) visit Who Owns You or Who Owns What (two different sites).

Well, that's just a few links. I have tons more-- if you're interested, let me know.

Welcome to Sociology 133
Welcome to Sociology 133, The Sociology of Mass Communications: Media/Culture/Power. Throughout the quarter, I'll be posting things to this website relevant to the course. This will include links to webpages that you'll need to examine for homework assignments, general announcements pertinent to the class, and also links to articles, etc. that may be of general interest or that provide updates to topics the class is focusing on. Send me an email if you come across anything that may be of interest to the class, and I'll post a link to that as well. (Note: this counts as a form of participation!).
